This listing is for a package of 30 Zanzibar Safflower seeds. AKA Carthamus tinctorius. Annual. Full to partial sun preferred. In warmer southern states partial shade required.
One of the most interesting flowers for fresh and dried floral arrangements! Great in containers for something different.
This variety is nearly thornless for easy harvesting. Sturdy stems loaded with branching flower clusters. Tufted thistle like blooms in bright fiery orange and yellow.
Petals are edible and can be used as a substitute for saffron.
Best when seeded directly outdoors in place once your regions last frost date has passed.
Can be started ahead indoors up to 4 weeks before your last frost date.
Cover seed very lightly with vermiculite or other light medium. Keep moist with light misting or bottom water to ensure little to no soil or seed disruption. Will need warmth to germinate. Prefers 65-75° soil temps. If started indoors and normal environment is not warm and light enough heat mat on low setting and overhead lights highly recommended. Harden off for several days to a week before transplanting outdoors after all danger of frost has passed. Supporting stems once plants are established will help with long straight stems for use in bouquets.
Plant height 18"-24" Spacing 9"
